The Balance Test – Are You Balanced or Imbalanced?

Zinzino’s BalanceTest is a simple dry blood-spot test for home sample collection. St. Olav’s University Hospital of Norway and other leading laboratories analyze the sample to determine your fatty acid profile as a reflection of your diet. It takes less than a minute to complete, and you can access your results online anonymously after about 20 days by entering your personal test code at web site www.zinzinotest.com.

The BalanceTest identifies levels of 11 fatty acids in the blood with 98% certainty. You will learn your blood levels of omega-3 and your ratio of omega 6:3 for balance, plus receive report to increase your health and dietary awareness. In a balanced diet the normal ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids will be near 3:1. If the result shows an imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids you are advised to consider changing your diet.

MicroscopeThe BalanceTest can be used before taking any omega-3 supplements to your diet to find out whether you need them, as well as to check effectiveness of your omega-3 supplement after 120 days. Zinzino Balance Products, when added to your diet, can help you adjust omega-6 / omega-3 ratio to optimal levels for balance. Statistics show that people who have consumed Balance products as recommended for at least 120 days, have a ratio near 3:1.

Test Examples

The easiest way to understand the test results at the first glimpse, is to use the color scheme. Red indicator box means your diet is unbalanced and pro-inflammatory. Yellow box means your diet is unbalanced and semi-inflammatory. Green box – your diet is balanced and anti-inflammatory. All green boxes mean an excellent result – your diet protects you against our most dangerous lifestyle related health issues.

1) The 1st test of 34 years old man from Europe. Quite typical for Europe, a lot of red indicators and an average omega-6/ omega-3 ratio 12.9:1. Haven’t used any omega-3 supplements before taking Zinzino BalanceOil.

Zinzino Balance Test sample No. 1, Man, 34 years old, Europe

The 2nd test of the same man after 120 days using Zinzino BalanceOil. Much, much better than the 1st one, but to be excellent, omega-3 level has to be raised above 8% that will improve also the other yellow indicators.Man35_Test2

2) The 1st test of 45 years old man from Europe. Did not use any omega-3 supplements before. Although the man is living as healthy lifestyle as possible, he suffered from high blood pressure (hypertension) with ratio 140-150 over 100 mm Hg. In spite of his healthy eating habits Omega-3 level is just a bit over the average in Europe, but it does not give a better omega-6/omega-3 balance to him as omega-6 (Arachidonic Acid) ratio is quite high. The 2nd test of the same man after 120 days using Zinzino BalanceOil. As this man understood reasons for 1st bad test results (eating too much products with omega-6 and too little omega-3), apart from using Zinzino’s BalanceOil, he also made changes in a diet excluding meat and plant oils. That was a mistake as essential omega-6 (Arachidonic Acid) ratio dropped down into the red zone (should not drop below 30%). In this case the good omega-6/omega-3 ratio does not count.

The 3rd test of the same man after 14 months using Zinzino’s BalanceOil. Totally perfect. After the 2nd test he switched back to healthy diet, eating a bit of ecologically grown meat and a bit of plant oils. The man also experienced improvement of his health condition. After about 4 months using BalanceOil his hypertension decreased to normal blood pressure level about 120 over 80 mm Hg. His regular headache had gone, and his mood turned from being nervous daily into much more sedate condition.

Description of Test Indicators

1Your Protection (Fatty Acids Profile Value) (0-100%, optimally >90%) – reflects the degree to which your diet protects you against the most dangerous lifestyle related health issues, and how the balance between the fatty acids in your diet affects your tendency towards inflammation and inflammatory conditions.

2Omega-3 (EPA+DHA) Level (0-12%, optimally >8%) – the combined percentage value of the marine omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA out of the total value of fatty acids found in the blood. The fatty acids profile in the blood represent the types of fats your body has available for energy and to develop cells and tissues. If the level drops below 4% (red zone), the body may experience difficulties in maintaining normal cell and tissue development (homeostasis).

3Omega-6 (AA)/Omega-3 (EPA) Balance (optimally <5:1) – this AA/EPA ratio represents the proportion of plant oils vs marine oils in your diet. A surplus of vegetable omega-6 fatty acids will make your diet unbalanced and pro-inflammatory. Uncontrolled inflammations resulting from omega-6 (AA)/omega-3 (EPA) balance being above 9:1 (red zone) will put a body on “fire”, while controlled inflammations support the immune system and general health.

O6-O3Omega-6 (AA)/ omega-3 (EPA) balance needs to be below 3:1 (green zone, dietary target) to help your body to control the inflammation process.Imbalanced and pro-inflammatory consumption of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids significantly affects cellular communication and inflammatory disorders.

Imbalance of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids have been observed in many diseases including heart disease, hyper tension, insulin resistance and diabetes, asthma, painful menstruation, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), senility, obsessive-compulsive disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts, and post-partum depression characterized by feeling restless, anxious, fatigued and worthless.

Balance between essential acids omega-6 and omega-3 is crucial to maintain normal cell and tissue functions (homeostasis) as well as mental wellness throughout the life cycle. The fatty acids have many functions in the body, being precursors for local “hormones” in the cells such as prostaglandins, leukotriens, and thromboxanes that regulate all inflammations as well as smooth muscle contraction and relaxation. A good omega-6 / omega-3 ratio would help also to maintain mental health and nerve function, healthy heart and circulation system, and healthy and optimal eye, brain and immune function.

4Arachidonic Acid (AA) Formation Efficiency (optimally >30) – this index reflects how efficient the enzymes are in converting dietary omega-6 linoleic acid (LA) into omega-6 arachidonic acid (AA). The enzymes itself may be impaired, up-regulated, or functioning within normal limits. If Arachidonic Acid (AA) Formation Efficiency is below 30 % (yellow or red value) you are advised to include the “Special Arachidonic Acid Dietary Advice” as an addition to your general dietary advice.

5Cell Membrane Fluidity Index (optimally <4) – reflects how efficiently your cells interact within their environment. The more saturated the fats are in a membrane, the more rigid the membrane is. Conversely, the more polyunsaturated the fats are in a membrane, the more fluid the membrane becomes. Flexible membranes ensure a proper metabolism among cells and improves hormone function in body.

6Mental strength Index (optimally <1)  – reflects your mood and cognitive status. Mood is significantly affected by the omega-6 (AA)/omega-3 (EPA) balance. A dietary change from an unbalanced pro-inflammatory value above 9:1 to a value of less than 5:1 immediately affects a number of factors linked to mental health in a significant manner, particularly for children with ADHD and elderly depressed individuals.

A study showed that a daily intake of 3 g of marine omega-3’s EPA and DHA for 3 months significantly decreased feelings of anger, anxiety, fatigue, depression and confusion, and increased vigor.

Childhood and old age are two critical and vulnerable stages in life when the supply of marine omega-3 in the form of EPA and DHA are fundamental for good brain functioning. In these periods, omega-3 deficiency is associated with learning and memory deficits as well as mood.
